Process
At Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance and the Allegan County Animal Shelter operated by Wishbone, our mission is to help pets find their forever homes. Our goal is that each animal we help to place is lovingly cared for until the end of his or her life. Owning a pet is a big responsibility – and we work to help potential pet owners understand the commitment, and to match the right pet for the person. By having this adoption process, we hope to prevent animals from winding up back at the shelter, and we hope to provide happy outcomes for all! Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process.
The following minimum criteria are required to adopt a pet from us:
- You must be 21 or older and be able to provide an established, stable, home environment.
- You must have a solid history of vetting for any current pets and a positive referral from your veterinarian.
- Any pets in your household must be current on vaccinations, neutered or spayed, and dogs must be licensed.
I meet the above criteria. What’s next?
The next step is a pre-adoption application. The purpose of this application is to gather information about your home, other pets and your general lifestyle to make an initial assessment of whether the pet you wish to adopt is suitable for you and is a good fit for the pet too. Additional pet or breed-specific restrictions may be placed on some pets. For example, large dogs are usually not placed in small apartments. Pet restrictions can be found on the pet’s biography at our Petfinder site. The next step is completing an application.
Complete an application.
If you’d like to move forward, great! The next step is to complete an adoption application. Our Adoptions Coordinator will call you if there are any questions about your application. Once we have spoken to your references we will to review your information and make the best determination for the animal’s placement. If you have questions at any point in the process, please call our Adoptions Coordinator at (269) 686-5112 Ext. 0.
Please allow up to 3-5 days for complete processing of your application. If we do not hear back from your references in a timely fashion, your application can be delayed.
