Why spaying-neutering is important.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, about 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs – about one every 11 seconds – are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay-neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation. Many cats and dogs who die as a result of pet overpopulation could have made wonderful pets.
A solution is possible and starts with each of us taking one small step: getting our own pets spayed or neutered. To help stop pet overpopulation further, consider adopting a pet from Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance. All adoptable pets under Wishbone’s care have been spayed or neutered.
In 2012 alone, our clinics helped 589 cats and dogs, including many ferals and stray cats living as community cats outside. The sponsorship for spay-neuter services for low-income families increased 30 percent due to donations and grant money received. We received donations from Women Who Care in Allegan and 4PAWS for a Cause, which helped to sponsor at least 200 more animals.
Our Low-Cost Spay-Neuter Clinic first came about with the help of community member Jane Underwood, who organized a fundraiser for Wishbone that provided the initial seed money to launch our first clinic in 2011. Grant writing as well as event donations have helped support the ongoing effort. Our first grant for the clinic was from West Shore AWARE, and the 2010 and 2011 4PAWS for a Cause fundraisers have provided support for this vital program. Funding help has also come from many individuals and community resources such as CaFe Pet Spa, the students of the Veterinary Technical Science program at the Allegan County Area Technical & Education Center, and the Allegan County Community Foundation TAG Team and Legacy grants.
