Helping our animals to find forever homes.
The Wishbone Transport Program is a major reason euthanization rates at the Allegan County Animal Shelter have been very low since Wishbone took over operating the shelter.
Of the animals that entered the Allegan County Animal Shelter in 2012, 97 percent of dogs and 75 percent of cats were rehomed. The Wishbone Transport Program will work to increase rehoming rates even further with a goal of helping all animals to find permanent, forever homes.
Our first goal, of course, is local adoption, and we are committed to adopting out to approved local families before transferring an animal to a rescue or a no-kill shelter. But our shelter has limited space, and we often are at capacity, so we work hard to move the animals along on their journey to permanent homes as safely, quickly and conscientiously as possible.
In early 2013, Wishbone was awarded a $10,000 Best Friends PetSmart Charities grant to help expand our efforts to find forever homes for our shelter animals. This lifesaving grant is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s mission of No More Homeless Pets®. Every day, approximately 9,000 pets are killed in shelters across the United States because they don’t have a home. Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities are committed to saving them.
Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets® Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society, which offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.
Wishbone coordinates with approved rescues and no-kill shelters with high visibility, quick placement rates and comprehensive adoption programs. For a rescue or shelter to be approved to receive dogs and cats under the Wishbone Transport Program, it must be state licensed, be a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and provide vet references. Wishbone also reviews protocols for adoption and surrender of animals, researches the organization’s history and contacts references. If for some reason the animal is unable to stay at the new rescue or shelter, Wishbone brings the animal home to Allegan in an ongoing effort to find a permanent home for the pet.
